Here are some tips from Home Comfort Canada to get your HVAC Heating and Cooling system ready for the change from the heating season to the cooling season.
If you have any questions, get in touch.
Tip #1: Check and clean your air conditioner…
If your outdoor air conditioner is covered, remove the cover. Before your switch your thermostat over from heat to cool, make sure that there is nothing obstructing your unit’s air flow, including debris, grass, leaves, plants, or paper.
Check that your A/C unit is still level, make sure that Winter ice hasn’t shifted your unit.
Cleaning of the outside condenser can save you high running costs during those hot Summer months. To clean the coil, you may vacuum it or wash it down with a garden hose after switching off the main disconnect. Keep the fan motor and control box as dry as possible. After cleaning the coil, flush any dirt from the base pan.
Tip #2: Program your thermostat …
Check that your programmable thermostat is set for the cooling season ahead. The key is to program the thermostat to adjust times and temperatures to correspond to your lifestyle. In the cooling season, you can set the thermostat a little higher for when you’re not going to be home.
Tip #3: Flip the humidifier switch …
Your furnace humidifier has a switch that is labeled Winter and Summer. You’ll want to flip the switch to turn off the humidifier. The humidifier is connected to a humidistat that allows you to control your home’s humidity in the Winter months. The water panel should be changed every three months during the humidifying season. Before you flip the switch back to Winter, change the water panel and order enough replacement water panels to see you through the season.
If you have ceiling fans you’ll also what to change the direction of their rotation.
Tip #4: Change and Clean Furnace Filters …
Dirty filters restrict airflow and can cause the system to run longer, increasing energy use. Filters should be checked each month for optimum efficiency. Dirty reusable filters should be washed with a mild detergent or replaced altogether. When installing a new filter, the airflow arrow should match the direction of your duct’s air flow. Changing the furnace filters will ensure proper air flow for your air conditioner. Give Brenda a call to order your replacement filters.
Tip #5: Have a heating and cooling specialist inspect your HVAC system annually…
A Home Comfort Canada HVAC technician will be able to check over, clean and lubricate your home heating and cooling system. We recommend that this be done annually before the heating season begins. If a cleaning is overdue, give us a call. Our annual inspection includes checking the indoor a-coil on the furnace and checking the air conditioner’s pressure for efficiency. » Learn more
